The experience of spinal pain is nearly guaranteed at some point in life and so severe in some cases that the people experiencing it are desperate for relief. Unfortunately, today’s online marketplace is flooded with “miracle” cures promising instant relief, all while preying on vulnerable people. To illustrate, a quick internet search of “neck and back pain tools” yields more than 80 million results in under one minute.Â
To be sure, not all the back pain and neck pain tools available today are dangerous. But how is a person to know which, if any, of them is helpful, which is useless, and perhaps most importantly, which may do irrevocable harm? As a spine surgeon who has cared for thousands of patients experiencing debilitating pain, I can say with certainty that many tools “promised to cure neck pain or back pain” can dangerously do the exact opposite. Though some back or neck pain tools may appear harmless at first glance, they may only offer temporary comfort, if any at all. That’s why it is crucial to understand the potential dangers lurking behind a seemingly harmless facade. Before diving into the latest back-fad, let’s shed light on the hidden risks.
Ignoring the Root Cause of Back or Neck Pain. Many pain relief tools today address symptoms, not the underlying cause of a person’s back or neck pain. Addressing only the symptoms of back pain or neck pain, and not the reason they have presented themselves, can mask severe issues like disc herniation or nerve compression, a tumor, or infection, thus delaying proper diagnosis and treatment.
Overcorrection and Misalignment. Lumbar rolls, inversion tables without the use of a trained professional implementing them, and other devices can force unnatural spinal postures, potentially leading to muscle strain, spinal misalignment, and even nerve damage. Always consult a healthcare professional before using any such tools.
The Downside of Vibration. Massage guns and percussive/vibration therapy devices offer temporary relief, but overuse can irritate nerves and damage soft tissues. Additionally, the use of vibration devices is never appropriate on the front or side of the neck, as the force could displace the carotid artery and result in a stroke. Though you may be able to purchase such devices at any popular sporting goods or department store, they aren’t harmless – mainly depending on how and where on the body they are used.
The Illusion of Effortless Healing. Stretching straps, heat wraps, and pain-relieving patches might feel good, but these implements do not address the root causes of back or neck pain. They can sometimes create dependence, possibly hindering the body’s natural healing process.
Beware the “Quick Fix” Myth. I’ve said it repeatedly, and I know it’s disappointing to hear, but there is no magic bullet for back and neck pain, especially chronic pain (lasting three months or longer). Lasting relief first requires an accurate diagnosis from a qualified healthcare provider – ideally, a spine specialist. Once a diagnosis is made, and depending on the condition that is causing the pain, long-term relief also often requires a holistic approach that may combine physical therapy, core strengthening exercises, posture correction, and lifestyle changes. A holistic approach is usually adequate for many back pain and neck pain sufferers. But it can take time.
