Inside Look At Devastating Shoulder Arthritis Damage⁉️

Understanding Shoulder Osteoarthritis, a common condition affects millions worldwide, particularly adults over 50. Shoulder #osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage covering the bones in your glenohumeral joint gradually deteriorates. Think of cartilage as the body’s shock absorber – when it wears away, bones begin to rub against each other, causing pain + limiting mobility. #shorts
.
X-rays are the first-line diagnostic tool, revealing:
• Joint space narrowing (decreased gap between humeral head – glenoid)
• Bone spurs (osteophytes)
• Subchondral sclerosis (increased bone density)
• Changes in bone shape
.
MRI can provide a more detailed view:
• Cartilage thinning and defects
• Bone marrow edema
• Synovial inflammation
• Associated rotator cuff damage
.
#ShoulderArthritis typically progresses in stages – from cartilage softening to cracking, flaking, and finally, complete erosion exposing the underlying bone. This progression can vary greatly between individuals. While osteoarthritis of the AC joint (where your collarbone meets your shoulder blade) often appears on X-rays in people over 50, it frequently causes no symptoms. Meanwhile, glenohumeral arthritis (where your arm bone meets your shoulder socket) almost always produces pain. Common symptoms include:
• Deep, aching pain that worsens with activity
• Reduced range of motion
• Stiffness, esp after rest
• Grinding/clicking sensations
• Difficulty w/ everyday tasks like brushing hair
If experiencing these symptoms, don’t wait until bone-on-bone contact develops. Early interventions like physical therapy, activity modifications, and appropriate pain management can help maintain function + delay progression #ShoulderHealth

  1. I'm facing two major shoulder replacement surgeries. And I'm actually scared. I had a hip replacement surgery that wasn't successful (I had a total of 9 surgeries on one hip) at first, but it's fine now. I'm worried about the same thing happening with my shoulder. I also have a knee replacement that went off without a hitch, but for my shoulders, the only alternative is having shoulder replacement surgery. There is no other option. The x-rays of both of my shoulders look like shoulders of a 90 year old with prominent dislocations in resting position. The doctors are shaking their heads and telling me I got a bad set of genetics.

  2. I completed my total shoulder replacement on my right shoulder 9 days ago, and the grinding, aching agony that has plagued me for 10 years is already gone. It's shocking. I was prepared for 3 difficult months, now I'm seeing knitting in my future inside of a month. I force myself to wear the sling so I don't get ahead of myself and grab something heavy. My left shoulder is still bad so I am looking fwd to getting that one done in the next year as well. 🙏 Thank you drs who wanted to go into a profession that matters. This is life-changing. I lost my dream job because of shoulder OA, now I see a fire with far less pain. ❤
