Pain Awareness Month is typically recognized annually during the month of September, and we believe it is a very important cause for a number of reasons. Speaking specifically to our craft, back pain is incredibly common, but it’s not a condition that always gets the attention it deserves given its magnitude. Many people are reluctant or even embarrassed to talk about their back pain issue, but keeping their burden hidden only makes it harder for them to effectively treat the condition. In today’s blog, we explain why it’s so important to be open and honest about your back pain issue during Pain Awareness Month.
Don’t Keep Back Pain Hidden
Talking about your back pain issue can be beneficial in more ways than you might realize. Here’s just a few of the reasons why it’s often helpful to talk about your back pain:
- It Gets The Ball Rolling On Treatment – If you don’t talk about your back pain with your primary care physician or a physical therapist, they may not be privy to your pain. They have the tools to help you manage your discomfort, but only if you tell them what’s bothering you.
- Good For Your Mental Health – Whether you’re talking with your doctor about your back pain or simply venting your frustrations to a friend, talking about your issues can actually be beneficial for your mental health. It can be liberating to talk about your personal challenges, and we shouldn’t ignore the mental and emotional toll that back pain can have on a person.
- Limits Isolation – Back pain can be extremely isolating, especially if you feel like you’re going through the issue on your own. Talk about your pain and the issues it’s causing, and we think you’ll find that others are more than willing to help you manage your burden.
- Opens Up Your Options – Medical technology and treatment programs are also advancing, and there may be new or simpler ways to address your back pain. Talking about your back pain can help you understand the different options available to effectively treat your spine pain.
- Treatment Success Likelihood Increases – The longer you keep your back pain problem a secret, the worse the condition typically becomes. As your condition worsens, it becomes less likely that treatment will completely or effectively resolve the condition. The sooner you talk about your condition and begin a treatment regimen, the better chance you’ll have at a more successful treatment outcome.
- You May Find A New Ally – As we mentioned above, back pain is incredibly common, and you might find that your willingness to talk about your personal battle with it leads to a new ally in your quest to overcome back pain. Maybe a neighbor had success treating their spine issue with a specific provider, maybe you start a walking routine with a co-worker who is also battling back pain, or maybe you join an online community of people who are facing similar challenges. You never know who you’ll connect with until you’re willing to talk about your issues with others.
