Can Spinal Fusion Lead to MORE Spine Surgery? #shorts

Adjacent Segment Disease is a condition caused by spinal fusions where the level above or below the fused vertebrae degenerate (because they are make up for the lack of movement at the level that was fused). The human spine is built for movement, when one of more levels are fused together it disturbs its normal movement. #Spinalfusion surgeries use bone grafts and/or hardware to permanently “lock” together two or more #vertebrae. The idea is to make the section of the spine thought to be causing pain immovable. After a #fusionsurgery, the spine loses the ability to move at the place where the procedure was done. Limiting the ability to bend forward, arch back, twist or tilt at the specific level or levels fused. “Locking” of the spine’s segment can force adjacent segments to compensate and try to keep the spine flexible. Unfortunately, this stresses and overloads those upper and lower vertebrae, forcing the intervertebral discs to break down and causing nerve compression and pain after back fusion leading to a condition known as #AdjacentSegmentDisease (ASD). ASD is most likely to occur in the motion segments of the spine used most often, such as L4/L5 and L5/S1 near the highly mobile lower lumbar region. They also tend to occur at the C5/C6 and C6/C7 near the highly mobile upper cervical region.
.
Overloading of the adjacent #spinalvertebrae can result in a number of conditions in the adjacent segments, including:
– Bone spurs
– Spondylolisthesis
– Herniated discs
– Degenerative arthritis (facet joints)
– Stenosis (narrowing of the spaces for the nerves)
.
These conditions can pinch the nerves in the spine, causing Radiculopathy (pain that radiates into the arms or legs) and Myelopathy (pain that travels along the spinal cord). Up to 25% of patients who have had fusions develop Adjacent Segment Disease about 5 years post-surgery (with higher risk in patients with 3- or 4- level fusions #discreplacement #spinalfusion #backsurgery #backpainrelief

  1. Hello everyone. I am about to have a L5 S1 fusion on the 9th of October in Beverly Hills. You have to choose the right Doctor for this! This has worked out for a lot of people.

Furthermore, adjacent segment disease is preventable with core strength and lifestyle.

I will be documenting this on my channel from start to finish to inspire and give hope. Keep the faith and God bless you all!

  2. Had a 2 level cervical disc replacement in my neck and the only reason im not 100% is the first ortho group i went to wasted 6 months doing everything in their power to not do surgery. Went to a second opinion with a younger surgeon trained on more up-to-date medicine and got the proper care. Im a firefighter so this potentially saved my career.

  3. Shut up. It depends on the patient and the dz. Jimmy Andrews and max burr fused me, Corey pavin and Hershel Walker in the same day. I had a refuse 25 yrs later and am 100% flexible. Jimmy was doing his fellowship

  4. Hi I have had multiple surgeries on l4, l5,S1 over the period of 16 years in uk. It's been 34 years. My pain didn't dissolve. Now Im in agony. I can't find anyone who could understand where the pain is actually coming from.

  5. Had two back surgeries first one was a fusion in 2019, failed from the start. Was in so much pain and needed rehab. Wasn’t able to walk without a walker for at least 9 months. 2nd surgery was in June 2024 a back decompression surgery. My pain is worse now. Working out is the only thing that helps somewhat with my pain. Some days I have less pain and most days I live and do everything with pain🥺😢. To make matters worse I’m only 42🙏🏾

  6. Pre-pandemic, my 79yr old mother-in-law had disc replacement surgery in her country. Pain relief was immediate, and recovery time was short. It's been 6 years, no re-accruing back/nerve pain. Now, I'm experiencing the same problem for the last 3 months.

  7. I have several fused cervical vertebrae. My stenosis was critically pressing on my spine. Unfortunately, Doc told me that an adjacent vertebrae was showing signs, and I stupidly said "go ahead and fix it." 🙄 I'm very aware of the wear on other vertebrae. Rather than being secure in the repair, I worry about it every day.

  8. And they wanna put a metal plate in my neck after that fusion but the doctor said you could come back a week later two weeks later and say oh I heard over here I heard over there and he said I’m not God and that

  9. I have severe spinal stenosis on the left side of my neck and they want to take out C3 and put some artificial disc in there or something and then they want to fuse my vertebrae together C3 and four. What is your opinion on that?

  10. My father was an orthopedist. I hurt my back, and my father told me if you can manage the pain, it's better than surgery in the long run. Once you go down the path of surgery, it can certainly lead to more surgery and more pain.

  11. It would have been nice if I was told this before having my cervical and lumbar surgery. I am so messed up now. I had myelopathy terribly and I was told it would get better after my cervical fusions. Nope….I am worse!

  12. I had c5-c6 fusion and my life has been hell since. I would say I am 90% worse off and its destroyed my life, The pain i get down my left arm is unreal, I only have to move it to quick or the wrong way and boom I'm in bits from the pain. The kicker is they was supposed to have done c6-to c7 done, Plus my surgery took 6 hours to do and i have had no follow up appointment since the op on the 29/10/24. I am a car detail by trade and have not worked since the operation.

  13. I had my fusion done in 2018 and yup it worsens every day. Now I have spinal stenosis, just suck up your pain that what my neurologist told me. It’s too risky to repair them. I had C 3-4-5-6-7 . I hated my life and regret my decision.
