Aquatic exercise & arthritis pain ☝🏽
Doing exercise in the pool can be a GREAT way to move in ways that don’t flare up pain, especially if you are dealing with high levels of pain 👍🏽
But, if you’re only doing exercises in the pool, standing activities may continue to be out of reach ☝🏽
Think about it, almost all the activities you are likely looking to improve are on land.
While the pool can help to lubricate the joints, help with stiffness, and improve strength to a certain point- your body also needs to be able to support itself on land 🙌🏼
Since the pool offloads some bodyweight, your muscles likely aren’t being challenged enough to support you on land.
Incorporating at least a few simple land based movements can be a great way to maximize the benefit from the pool.
Once you get out of the pool and your joints are feeling good- trying just a couple of land based movements such as sit to stands, heel raises, moving sideways/backwards, and/or balance movements can be a great way to get started 😇
Think about, have you incorporated at least 1-2 land movements on the days you are doing exercises in the pool?

I started doing water aerobics 6 days a week. I wasn’t doing any walking on land because of hip pain caused by a certain medication I took after having cancer. I’m no longer on the medication so I started walking again, it’s so important to walk and do strength training exercises

Thank you for your channel!
I'm struggling to get enough exercise though so going in the pool isn't a bad thing, right? 😢
Thanks you for this, I now do gentle exercises on land, like gentle walking etc and daily gentle exercises and I also do 30 mins in a pool twice a week to try to keep as healthy as possible.
I initially was going 3x swimming for an hour each time, for a few months and it was great, but tbh it became a burden, as it was a lot to fit in, the pool was 40 mins away, and always in traffic so it seemed to take up half the day all in all, I found it a lot to squeeze it all in a week.
I became exhausted, as with everything else I was doing it was too much.
So I stopped for a while, after a few months I really noticed the difference so I’ve found a swimming pool that’s only 15mins away.
I now go twice a week for 35-40 mins ( which is more realistic for me, and then I have a day off once a week to chill.
It seems to be working well😊so far .
I enrolled in a beginning swim class. The leg movement to swim hurt my hip so I quit the class.
You are right. I swim but PT is making me stronger. Years of pain. Big toe pain. Dr said arthritis I kept saying no, finally found a pt that understands pelvic floor issues
I cannot lie down on my hip. Bursitis or arthritis?
I swim 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. You're right. I need to add some walking. I really feel surprised that I don't feel stronger with just swimming. 70 year old woman
My ankle was broken in 2 places, I got my cast off and I don’t know how to go down the stairs and I’m still limping quite a bit
I learned the need to do a mix of land and pool after I was doing pool exercises exclusively. Then I did a trip to France and had to walk a LOT. It became difficult. Now I mix land and pool. Thanks Allyssa.
Sooooo do we do land exercises in pool?
