What Is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction?

Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a weeks-long program aimed at physically, mentally and emotionally helping you find ways to reduce or eliminate sources of stress in your life that may be contributing to your spine pain or standing in the way of effective treatment. Stress can weigh heavy on a person, negatively affecting this ability to overcome back pain in a number of ways, including:

When we’re stressed, muscles can tense, our posture can suffer and our movement patterns can become less than ideal. Managing stress appropriately can relax our muscles and naturally help our spinal alignment when we’re seated or moving.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction comes in many different forms, but at its core, it helps people become more aware of their emotions and thought patterns while working to reframe sources of stress in the mind. It may involve treatments like:

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Movement awareness
  • Stress recognition and identification
  • Mindful eating

The goal here is to alter how a person responds to emotional and physical challenges. Through these techniques, they teach the patient to learn how to reduce emotional reactivity and become more resilient in the face of expected and unavoidable stress.
