Psoriatic arthritis is a long-term inflammatory arthritis that occurs in people affected by the autoimmune disease psoriasis.[1][2] The classic feature of psoriatic arthritis is swelling of entire fingers and toes with a sausage-like appearance.[3] This often happens in association with changes to the nails such as small depressions in the nail (pitting), thickening of the nails, and detachment of the nail from the nailbed.[3] Skin changes consistent with psoriasis (e.g., red, scaly, and itchy plaques) frequently occur before the onset of psoriatic arthritis but psoriatic arthritis can precede the rash in 15% of affected individuals.[3] It is classified as a type of seronegative spondyloarthropathy.

Genetics are thought to be strongly involved in the development of psoriatic arthritis.[3] Obesity and certain forms of psoriasis are thought to increase the risk.[3]

Psoriatic arthritis affects up to 30% of people with psoriasis and occurs in both children and adults.[3] Approximately 40–50% of individuals with psoriatic arthritis have the HLA-B27 genotype.[3] The condition is less common in people of Asian or African descent and affects men and women equally.[3]

  1. I had a reverse shoulder replacement ( and need the other one done) before someone figured out I have psoriatic arthritis, though I had the classic symptoms. Sometimes you really don't know if you have a good doctor or a lousy one until very late in the game. 😞

  2. exercise, plant-based diet and fasting are they key. it really impoved my symptoms. my arthritic pain reduced for like 80% and my psoriasis was dry. but i ate unhealthy foods again that's why it came back

  3. Got it in '97. Im riddled with it. Theres only one thing worse and thats the poisonous drugs they give you for it. Ive found medicinal cannabis to be by far the most effective and liveable solution.

  4. Here is how I improved my symptoms: Low impact exercise such as rowing and walking. Sun exposure at the beach. Swimming in sea water while under the sun is a game changer. Finally, diet. Eating Whole Foods such as fruit and vegetables and avoiding processed foods (anything with an extended shelf life). Also, fasting and eating on a schedule.

  5. I've got most symptoms for spondylitic psa. my neck, tailbone/lower back hurts to sit, bend, step up, and my spine in general is stiff. naturally the rheumatologist I went to was flaky and never even noticed my knees were scaly and rough and the tendon problem was Osgood schlatter, but started forming after the age of 35. I inherited a mild case of psoriasis on my knees and elbow, knuckles perhaps too…

  6. My whole family have psoriasis. Now believe me when I say, psoriasis happens where the skin is thick. This halts oxygen from blood reaching the surface. This makes the thick outer derma die & flake off
