Sciatica Relief: Why Bending Over Feels Impossible (And How to Fix It)

If you suffer from chronic sciatica, you know the fear that comes with simple, everyday movements. Getting out of your car, sitting down on the toilet, or bending over to pick something off the floor can trigger a sudden, agonizing flare-up.

To find true sciatica relief, we have to look at how you perform the most fundamental human movement of all: The Squat.

The Vertical Test: Auditing Your Mechanics

At my practice, we don’t just guess where your pain is coming from; we perform a mechanical audit. The squat is our ultimate “vertical test” because it reveals exactly how you lower your center of gravity to interact with the world.

When evaluating a squat, we look for three major mechanical faults that destroy spinal integrity and irritate the sciatic nerve:

  • The Knee Strategy: Instead of initiating the movement by pushing the hips back, many people shoot their knees straight forward. This disengages the powerful glute muscles and forces the lower back to absorb the stress.
  • The “Butt Wink”: As you lower into a squat, your spine should maintain a neutral, slightly arched position. If your tailbone tucks under your pelvis at the bottom of the movement (the “butt wink”), you are putting massive amounts of loaded pressure directly onto your spinal discs.
  • The Lateral Shift: Because the sciatic nerve is highly sensitive, your brain will subconsciously shift your body weight away from the painful side. If you look in the mirror while squatting and notice you are leaning heavily onto your “good” leg, you are dealing with a lateral shift.

Relearning How to Move

The goal of our 30-Day Anti-Fragile Intensive isn’t to give you random exercises; it’s to give you a roadmap. By auditing your squat and identifying whether you have a butt wink or a lateral shift, we can pinpoint exactly which motor skills you need to relearn.
