Spine Surgery: When Is It Needed for Advanced Slip Disk? Explained by Orthopaedic Surgeon

Spine-related issues are often manageable with non-surgical methods such as medications, physiotherapy, exercise, and activity modification. However, in cases of Advanced Slip Disk, when the disk compresses nerves and causes weakness in the legs and arms, spinal surgery may become necessary.

In this video, Dr. Chinmay Nath, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Barasat, explains the conditions that may require spine surgery and when it is needed. Dr. Nath emphasizes that surgery is only required for serious conditions like advanced slip disk and should not be considered for minor spine issues.

Understanding the difference between treatable spine conditions and those that require surgery is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment. For patients dealing with advanced slip disk, early intervention can help prevent long-term nerve damage and improve overall health outcomes.

  1. Hello Sir, Due to cervical Myelopathy I had gone through cervical surgery in Mar18. Nerve was pinched in c5-6-7. Hence caused tingling-numbness – then loses functioning/grip particularly in right hand & both legs. After surgery tingling/numbness totally removed however the grip lost in both legs & right hand fingures couldn't covered. 6-7 months afterwards hand/fingures grip recovered @ 80-90% but both legs are still not that much recovered. Means stiffness/spasticity is there in both legs. Due to which legs unable to perform as that of natural. Hence please advise whether this problem could be recovered immediately or it will take time & improve slowly on its own. I did advance physiotherapy as well. However no improvement. Hence please advise how to overcome & treatment to remove stiffness in legs. Thanks.
