Spinal injections are oftentimes seen as a form of treatment for a variety of different back pain issues, but their uses vary more than most people realize. These injections can serve many purposes, making them a wonderful option for patients dealing with all sorts of spinal ailments. Why Spinal Injections Are Administered
Your spine specialist may harness spinal injections for a few different purposes during the course of your care. Here’s how they are commonly used:
- Diagnosis – As we mentioned above, many people assume that spinal injections are used as part of a treatment program, but they may actually be used earlier in the process when the provider is working to learn more about the patient’s condition. Contrasting dye can be injected into specific areas of the spine, which can help to highlight specific conditions when the area is imaged through an X-ray, MRI or CT scan. These injections provide a much more detailed look into the spine.
- Pain Relief – Of course, a corticosteroid injection can also help to provide pain relief. These injections deliver concentrated anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medication to a specific area of the spine. As we tell all patients who are recommended for this type of injection, know that this is not a long-term solution to your issue. You should be pursuing other helpful treatment options, like physical therapy, exercise and weight loss while the effects of the injection are most noticeable. These pain injections provide some good short-term relief, but they do not target the underlying cause of discomfort, so they are best delivered as part of a comprehensive treatment program.
- Stabilization – A spinal injection may also be administered as part of an operation to help stabilize a spinal segment. Bone cement or a similar material may be injected into a fracture or spinal cavity. Once this material hardens, the spinal segment gains immense stability. Sometimes injections can help to provide stability to specific areas of the spine where degeneration or a fracture has compromised the integrity of the spinal column.
- Pre-operative Anesthetic – Finally, it’s also possible that your doctor will deliver anesthetic medication via an injection prior to an operation. Many expecting mothers receive a similar type of injection – the epidural injection – during labor as a way to mitigate discomfort during the childbirth process. A spinal injection may be used as a way to prep you for an upcoming procedure or medical event.
