Treating Sacral Cysts Of The Spine

Category: Spine | Author: Stefano Sinicropi

Oftentimes, sacral cysts of the spine are so small that they do not cause any symptoms, but if they grow or irritate sacral nerves, a host of different symptoms can develop. In today’s blog, we explore why these sacral cysts develop, what symptoms they cause and how the cysts are treated.

Treating Sacral Cysts

If asymptomatic sacral cysts are uncovered when imaging for another condition, odds are no proactive treatment will be needed. Your doctor may recommend regular imaging in the future to keep an eye on their size, but if they are not causing any problems, there’s no real need for treatment.

In the event that you are dealing with symptoms that are the result of a sacral cyst formation, your doctor will walk you through a few different treatment options. Smaller cysts may first be managed with the help of medications and physical therapy to potentially shrink the cyst or help you strengthen bladder or bowel function that has been inhibited by cyst formation. If those conservative treatments don’t work, more hands-on care may be needed. A corticosteroid injection to resolve inflammation and decrease cyst size can prove helpful, or your doctor may recommend a minimally invasive procedure to drain or remove the cyst. Additional care will be taken during the procedure to decrease the likelihood that the cyst returns.

Untreated sacral cysts can lead to worsening symptoms or even permanent nerve damage, so it’s important that you have them addressed in the event that you begin to suffer from some of the previously mentioned symptoms. Dr. Sinicropi and his team have an impeccable track record of helping patients overcome cyst-related spinal discomfort, and he can do the same for you.
