Professor Peter O’Sullivan – re-thinking back pain:
Facet joints are small joints at the back of the spine that allow movement and flexibility — but they can also become a source of back or neck pain.
In this video, spinal surgeon, Anthony Ghosh explains:
• What facet joints are and what they do
• How facet joint pain develops (arthritis, strain, posture)
• Typical symptoms and how it feels
• How facet joint pain is diagnosed
• Treatment options — from physiotherapy and exercise to injections or surgery (in rare cases)
• How strengthening and movement can help protect these joints long-term
If you’ve been told your back pain is due to “facet joint arthritis” or “facet joint syndrome,” this video will help you understand what that really means — and what you can do about it.
There are multiple professionals (surgeons, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and more) who treat back and spine problems. But often they work independent of each other and few patients have someone taking responsibility of overall oversight of care in a team. This is why I founded The Spine Multi-Disciplinary team (MDT), to bring all professionals of spine care together under my oversight as a surgeon to provide spine care that gets results.

I had a alif done 3 months ago for facet hypertrophy and a bulging disc. I still feel pain from my facet hypertrophy, over time when the fusion stabilizes will this pain alleviate?
There are so many people out there who deal with this issue, Anthony!
I hope this video will make its way to them. A big help could be to work on a better thumbnail that shows the benefit of clicking on the video. Right now, it displays "facet joints", which is what you're talking about, but the image is Chinese to me. And that's how many potential viewers might feel.
Instead, try to focus on the solution you mention at the end of the video, without giving everything away. For example "Here's How To Fix It" or "Easy Fix?". Hope it helps!
Thank you for the clear explanation, it has helped me understand what I’m feeling.
