Facet joint syndrome, sometimes referred to as facet disease, is a condition that affects the facet joints as they degenerate from years of wear and tear. The facet joints are part of the connection between two adjacent vertebrae. Because the facet joints are almost constantly in motion, they simply degenerate from wear and tear or repetitive stresses and strains over time as we age. This is why the condition is more commonly found in the elderly.
With age related natural wear and tear of the spine, Facet joint syndrome develops as the spinal discs become thinner, placing more stress on the facet joints. The increased stress causes inflammation and formation of spinal bone spurs leading to arthritis of the facet joint, or facet syndrome. The development of arthritic joints can produce considerable pain and other facet joint symptoms that are felt when the joint is in motion.
As facet disease develops, muscle spasms may occur as protective reflex responses. In conjunction with the development of facet disease, powerful muscle spasms will force the spine out of alignment. Thus, treating facet syndrome will usually involve relaxing the spastic muscles.

  1. I have been suffering with this since my 30's. I'm now 68 and still coping pain. It's unbelievable and without the medical team helping me just with the pain issues I believe I'd be in a wheelchair. It took years to be diagnosed. Finally a pain management/anesthesiologist ordered a CT scan with and without contrast of my spine they would still believe I was drug seeking. I'm allergic to nsaids and Tylenol. Not my fault

  2. Finally! A medical pro who actually pronounced the word "facet" properly! I can't believe how many doctor's videos I've watched where the doctor mispronounces a word that has been in the English language for hundreds of years, and defined by Noah Webster in the early 1800's! Good grief doctors and all would be doctors: It's pronounced " fa'–sit" with the "a" having a sound as in "cat". And the first syllable gets the accent! Not the second!
Anyway, I was just reading a recent MRI report of my lumbar spine, and it said, among other problems; that I have "facet arthropathy", which is why I came here! Thank-you! Apparently doctors have little English language and grammar training.

  3. Just got diagnosed with this.. been suffering for years with back pain but just lived with it. Now at 50 I’m in so much pain it’s hard to move but I know if I don’t force myself I’ll be worse the next day. Anyway I love you all and pray for those suffering with this. God bless
