  1. Any have lower leg pain like a cramp in the calf after their laminectomy? I’ve got zero back pain but I what feels like a cramp in my calf that’s causing me to limp and not take a full step. Can I do anything to fix this?

  2. I just had surgery August 11th and I am having pain again in my right leg. It’s not as bad as it was before my surgery but it’s still painful. Did anyone experience this? Or thought your sciatica was returning? Please help to understand if this is normal

  3. My surgery was done during the pandemic May 2021 in Toronto and unfortunately I was confined to my bed (without Covid but exposed to it) right after my cervical laminectomy with fusion. c3- down are removed and I’m fused into my thoracic spine. Not having the correct aftercare and moving impacted my recovery. I’m still suffering and they discovered broken screws and loose screws sept ‘25 but have left them. I had an MRI yesterday on the cervical spine and thoracic spine. I am grateful to they saved me. I miss living.

  4. Just had this done at l5-S1 for second time in past 6months. 10 days in after revision surgery an pain is coming back. Had l4-l5 done back in 2017 an has been fine. This time just cant get it seem work. Doctor said fusion will be next option

  5. Ok I have had this surgery from my C-3 to my T-3 in December. It's April now and although I can feel my legs, I can't move them. And have lost strength in my legs and still stuck in a wheelchair and rehabilitation facility

  6. Is this an anterior or posterior procedure? Also, since you’re removing bone from the vertebrae, does this pose additional risk to the spinal column? The bone is meant to protect the spinal column. Also does the bone from being cut away develop a tendency to regrow with excess as in scar tissue?

  7. Does the back of the neck look wierd afterwards? Not sure yet but i will be having a single level laminectomy without fusion ( unless ct shows something previously unseen). And is there little risk of instability? I assume so if no fusion is needed..yeah?

  8. Iv had bulges at L2-3, 3-4m 4-5 and 5-s1 for 20yr. In November of 2023 I was cutting some limbs from the trees and one got stuck. I’m 110# female but I was tugging that thing like my life depended on it. It came free but I sat down hard…..I got right up and kept going. I felt no pain whatsoever other than my “normal” back pain that I’d gotten used to over the years.
So about a week later I woke up one morning and couldn’t bear weight on my legs. I literally crumbled. I got myself up and was trying to walk but the pain was unbearable. I’m sobbing, can’t sit still, calling my doc and begging for an epidural. I go in and get it…he’s closing shop for the whole month of December to travel and visit family. First time he’s ever done that for that long. We talked about how it was good I didn’t miss him before he left and I went home to wait the couple of days it usually takes to feel better. It didn’t get better. It got worse. Over the next month I saw 2 chiropractors, 2 sports medicine doctors and a GP. Once they heard I had “previous back injuries” they just blamed it on that and didn’t look deeper. I lost 20# because if no one was home to help me get food I couldn’t get up to go eat any. I kept hoping it would calm down. My entire left leg was involved and it felt like I’d broken my hip or torn my butt muscles. I tried to stretch, I got a tens unit, I got a massage gun….my thigh hurt, my calf hurt and oddly specific my middle toes hurt and the bottom of my injured
Finally my doc comes back and does a nerve block….one for relief but 2 for diagnosis reasons. It worked. I had no more nerve pain but now it felt like my tailbone was injured .
It had been so long since I hadn’t had pain that I really forgot what was “normal” or not.
Finally saw a neurosurgeon and he did a bilateral laminectomy as well as budge reduction on the other discs.
When I woke up I could feel my foot (still have on an ankle brace because it stayed sprained because I rolled it constantly after that nerve block)
I had no pain in my hips. When they stood me up to walk, my legs felt so funny….they felt light! The only way I can describe it was that for 20yr I wore 10lb ankle weights and sudd leg they were removed. I was high stepping almost like a puppet that got its strings cut. I never realized how heavy my legs had felt til I felt them NOT heavy lol. The constant ache in my hips/pelvis is gone. The numbness was about 50% better when u woke from surgery and it’s day 2 now and I’d say it’s 75% better. I have muscles that feel knotted in my butt cheek where they hadn’t worked for so long that are now functioning when I walk. I have high hopes this is going to be what I needed. If on day 2 while I’m so sore and stitched up I can say I feel BETTER than when I went in…I’d do this surgery again every day and twice on Sunday.

  9. Thank you brother . Problem with va is sends you to nearest doctor . In New Mexico it took a year to see a neurosurgeon. 3 hospitals already noted my spine is too complex for them . Problems I don't get a straight answer or no answer . As a nurse I see the look on thier faces . "Oh crap I don't want to get involved in this train wreck" one top neuro surgeon in Florida said "I wouldn't know where to start and I might hurt you " one guy wants a two day surgery going through abdomen and placing a cage . UCLA wants to put a morphine pump in so I can be comfortable sitting in a corner waiting to die . New Mexico said I have flat back syndrome and scoliosis as back is collapsing to the left . New Mexico neurosurgeon wants to break my low back rebuild it and place rods top to bottom . It's killing my legs and hips . C2 in neck is impinged . I need plate frombacdf taken out because I choke when swallowing and there's a ostephyte = bone growing out of it . Confirmed with swallow study .had Laminectomy L4-l5 in 1994 . Neck emg's are nasty . Had bilateral carpal tunnel and brachial release . I'm hoping this younger doctor who is up to date on tech , the energy , and enjoys the challenge. Can at least give me part of my mobility back and my life . I'm a young 62 . A reduction in pain . You want a mid career surgeon . Older surgeons want easy money . New surgeons can be over confident or not skilled enough . I need a team to look at entire spine and come up with plannofvattack . Every disc is bad except one . Hope this helps someone .

  10. Had this done in 2009…L4 and L5. Neurosurgeon did mine. Had me up walking same day, stayed one night in hospital but that may have been because i developed the worst headache ive ever had in my life! He said it couldve been from anesthesia.

Anyway, nerve pain diminished very quickly and have been good ever since (knock on wood).

My oldest sibling had 2 of these surgeries to fail and the 3rd surgery they had to go in from the front/abdomen. She seems to be doing ok for many years now.

So sorry for those who are suffering 😢

  11. What about rods top to bottom ? Ex military . Or getting answers one top neuro surgeon said "I wouldn't know where to start and I might hurt you" UCLA said "stay away from surgeons "and wanted a morphine pump placed . One neuro surgeon New Mexico said I have flat back syndrome now scoliosis . Back collapsing to left . VA = too complex for us. Had ACDF , laminectomy L4-5 every disc 6mm. Bulge 7mm bulge . Spondiolosis, on and on . I just ended long high level career as a nurse due to this . I can barely walk to the mail box and in pain 24/7 on major meds . And they wonder why us vets commit suicide . ???

  12. Hey doc, I've been told to just deal with my pain.. I've got 4 discs lapsed/bulging so no neuro will touch me. I got cauda equina last yr so a bilateral discetomy was done but I still have so much nerve pain. Is it true in your opinion there are cases where nothing can be done? Thanks for your vids btw, really informative

  13. Why isn't the first course of action to just replace the discs? Surely it's been done long enough. Personally I've had this and disc material cut out and could have another done but it would ruin my chances for a disc replacement the doctor said because it reduces stability of the spine when you cut stuff off of it. Fusions are bad as well. My wife is a PT and has so many people come back when the discs wear out above and below the fused vertebrae.

  14. I had l4 l5 and s1 laminectomy 7 days ago. Should I heal another week before stretching? I walk 10,000 steps a day tho. I can’t lay flat on my back because of back of thigh nerve uncomfortable nothing crazy before surgery but it’s uncomfortable. I can only sleep on my side with pillow between my legs.. any advice can you give me Dr?

  15. My L4 L5 S1 fusion and Laminectomy absolutely RUINED my life as I knew It. It is so much worse now. I still have the old problems but now have more than I started with. I don't know what to do now. 😢 But things can not continue as it is now. It's a very helpless feeling.
