Hey folks, dr. jeff williams with Creek stone care right here in Amarillo, tx coming to you with another research and evidence-based blog.
Here’s a study from 2011. It’s a randomized controlled study showing the effectiveness of cervical manipulation and cold laser (low level laser) for facet dysfunction.
First, let’s get a little bit of perspective on what a facet is. Here’s what we call a vertebral segment. This is one vertebra stack on another. You’ll see that the two bones articulate in the front through the soft disc. On the back side of the segment, the two vertebrae articulate with each other through the facets.
It all works together like a sort of a puzzle if you will.
These facets can jam or just simply become dysfunctional through our activities of daily living. When that happens, discomfort, pain, muscle spasms, reduced range of motion, and reduced quality of life can follow.
Why They Did It
The goal was to find out the effectiveness of cervical manipulation combined with cold laser for the treatment of cervical facet syndrome. A common trigger for neck pain in otherwise healthy individuals.
How They Did It
6 women were accepted into the study.
Their ages ranged between 18 and 40 yrs old.
They all suffered from cervical facet joint pain lasting more than 30 days.
Their treatments were randomized into 3 different protocols:
Manipulation (Chiropractic)
Cold laser
A combination of the two treatments.
The following Outcome Assessments were used to measure the results and effectiveness:
Numeric Pain Rating Scale
Neck Disability Index
Cervical Range of Motion Instrument
Baseline Digital Inclinometer.
Measurements taken in weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4.
What They Found
Significant improvements were found among all treatment groups but most noticeably in group 3.
Wrap It Up
All 3 groups showed improvement but a combination of manipulation and cold laser proved most effective and both are proven to be viable treatment protocols for cervical facet syndrome.
